The postman Mario Jiménez, a timid teenager, has only one client – the poet Pablo Neruda, exiled for his political beliefs to a small island. Mario tries to conquer the heart of the young Beatrice that is why he wants to learn from Neruda how to write poetry. He never learned to write poetry, but won the Beatrice's heart and also Neruda became a good friend of his.
“The Postman Of Neruda” is neither a love story, nor a political novel, or perhaps it has a bit of both, but certainly it is a work full of poetry and fine irony. And the Skármeta's masterly amazing language convert the novel into what has always been called a masterpiece.
