"The Conspiracy of the Dead" by Marin Georgiev is a story about the "intermediate Bulgarian time". For a time that supposedly no longer exists, but which must be witnessed if we want to understand what and how it was. The stories and testimonies in the book start even before 1989 and the era of the People's Republic of Bulgaria, but in fact they accumulate like piles of diaries, notes or letters, settled in the author's memory during the years of the never-ending transition. They are highly biased and sharp, often demythologizing and even debunking - this is how the author saw and felt the people and events he describes.
Some of the characters in these stories have long been forgotten, others such as Emilian Stanev, Konstantin Pavlov, Ivaylo Petrov, Toncho Zhechev or Vera Mutafchieva emerge in more than unexpected light for the reader. But this is the situation with memoirs: every reader of such a book agrees to check his/her watch with the author, reserving the right to disagree. The past is a reality passing through different receptive horizons.”
