Poems

2023 is a significant date - 160 years since the birth and 90 years since the death of what many consider the greatest modern Greek poet Konstantinos P. Kavafis

Current edition is dedicated to this double anniversary. For the first time, the Bulgarian reader will have access to the complete corpus of 154 poems authored by Konstantinos P. Kavafis, arranged by the writer G. P. Savidis. This is also the first uncensored translation of the poet's "scandalous" intimate lyrics, which caused quite a bit of controversy. For the first time, the reader will be able to fully enjoy the metric in the original and the rich structural and rhyming construction of his works. A guarantee for this is the fruitful cooperation between the classical philologist and established translator from modern Greek and ancient Greek Ivan B. Genov and Kiril Kadiiski - our great master of poetic translation, himself known and appreciated as a poet not only in Bulgaria but also abroad.

The edition is accompanied by an afterword and comprehensive critical material by Ivan B. Genov, as well as a foreword by Prof. Cleo Protochristova, entitled "Kavafis - the Poet of Alexandria, the World Poet", which justifies his status as "the most significant Greek poet of the twentieth century".

About the Author
Konstantinos P. Kavafis

Konstantinos Petrou Kavafis (April 29, 1863 – April 29, 1933), known, especially in English, as Constantine P. Cavafy and often published as C. P. Cavafy, was a Greek poet, journalist, and civil servant from Alexandria. His work, as one translator put it, "holds the historical and the erotic in a single embrace."

Cavafy's friend E. M. Forster, the novelist and literary critic, introduced his poems to the English-speaking world in 1923, famously describing him as "a Greek gentleman in a straw hat, standing absolutely motionless at a slight angle to the universe." Cavafy's consciously individual style earned him a place among the most important figures not only in Greek poetry, but in Western poetry as a whole.

Cavafy wrote 154 poems, while dozens more remained incomplete or in sketch form. During his lifetime, he consistently refused to formally publish his work and preferred to share it through local newspapers and magazines, or even print it out himself and give it away to anyone interested. His most important poems were written after his fortieth birthday, and officially published two years after his death.
