Marina Tsvetaeva

Marina Tsvetaeva

Marina Tsvetaeva (1892 – 1941) was a Russian poet, playwright, translator and essayist.

She wrote her first collection of poems (“Evening Album”) at the age of eighteen. Impetuous and surprising in her poetry, as in her life, she was entirely intent on need of writing and fierceness of loving. (Tsvetaeva's affairs and passionate friendships played a key role in her poetry, as did her feverish devotion to her husband.)

Her poetry stands outside the trends of her time, though it shares some of the mysticism of the Symbolists, the bold experimentation of the Futurists and the directness of the Acmeists.

She lived in exile after 1922 but returned to the Soviet Union in 1939, committing suicide two years later. Her poetry, which included works praising Czarist troops, was not published in the Soviet Union until 20 years after her death.
