Characteristics

The young programmer David Lisner lives in the Land of the Upright, an overdeveloped technological society that has nearly achieved perfection in its concern for the happiness of its citizens. Eva Montoya lives on the Island of Exiles, who lead an environmentally friendly life based on the right to choose and on decisions freely made. David is tasked by the secret service to contact Eva and find out from her what her recently deceased uncle, the eminent sociologist Robert Solo, has been working on. But Eva refuses to be manipulated, and David begins to ask questions about his own life, his profession, his future. The novel - both a technological dystopia and a psychological thriller - evokes thoughts about choice, freedom, our over-reliance on high technology and the world we would like to live in.
