Characteristics

Zora is a young Algerian woman bearing the scars of a war of independence she did not live through, having miraculously survived the civil war of the 1990s. Her tragedy is written on her body in the form of a scar on her neck and destroyed vocal cords. She dreams of regaining her voice, but now she can only tell her story to the daughter she carries in her womb. But does she have the right to keep this child? In a country where women are doomed to an unenviable fate and whose laws punish anyone who dares to mention the civil war? Zora decides to return to her native village, where it all began, because only the dead can give her an answer.

Exploring the traumas of the dark decade that befell Algeria, Kamel Daoud's Hurriya raises serious questions about the past and future of an entire nation through its documentary truthfulness.
