Characteristics

This time, Jonasson takes us to Sweden in the mid-19th century—a time of famine and misery. The Ulsson family runs a pig farm in the middle of the lands of the malicious and envious Count Bilkegren. After the death of the swineherd, the count decides that the time has come to get his hands on his property – and he is willing to do anything to get it. But the swineherd's son, Algott Ulsson, is of a different breed – smart, inventive and stubborn. From his father, he inherits only a horse and... a cauldron for the local alcoholic beverage, Brenevin. Soon, the whole region is talking about Algot's miracle cure for dark thoughts. Meanwhile, he meets master printer Helmut Zimmerman and his clever and freedom-loving daughter Anna Stina, who can put any man in his place. The three of them go to war against aristocratic greed, armed with wit, humor, and a considerable amount of brennivin.

Jonas Jonasson

After a long career as a journalist, media consultant and television producer, Jonas Jonasson decided to start a new life. He wrote a manuscript, he sold all his possessions in Sweden and moved to a small town by Lake Lugano in Switzerland, only a few meters from the Italian border. The manuscript became a novel. The novel became a phenomenon in Sweden, and now it is about to reach the rest of the world.
