The Return of the Words
In his autobiographical essay "History of My Misfortunes", the medieval philosopher Peter Abelard (XII century) describes in details his "forbidden" love for his student Héloïse. After her relatives punish him severely with castration, they both separate from each other and go to monasteries. Their only connection is their correspondence. She confesses her love for him, and he - his love for God. A careful reading of his work leaves the impression of a deeply subjective confession, which does not evaluate or even ignores the feelings of Héloïse. Their love drama is presented entirely through his eyes, while the voice of Héloïse was lost unheard.
