Why does Claire Lancel have to defend herself in court? What happened to her companion and to her? Your Promise is a novel that uses the devices of a thriller to explore themes of lying and manipulation, emotional dependence and psychological abuse through the love affair between the writer Claire Lancel and the director Gilles Fabian, a relationship that quickly becomes—or perhaps was from the very beginning—toxic. Written with a subtle psychological sensibility in a unique style, at times deliberately disregarding grammatical rules, with passages inserted into measured speech, the book immerses us in the drama of a story in which the promises exchanged between lovers become a starting point for doubts, suffering, love, and again doubts, love, and again suffering, until the writer's painful return to creativity. As for the court's decision, it naturally becomes clear a few pages before the end of the book.
