Elizabeth Kostova Presents Philip Roth

Dear friends, we invite you to share with us an evening devoted to the work of one of the greatest writers of our time - the living classic of modern American literature, Philip Roth!

Philip Roth is the most decorated American writer of his era. Two of his works of fiction have won the National Book Award; two others were finalists. Two have won National Book Critics Circle awards; again, another two were finalists. He has also won two PEN/Faulkner Awards and a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for his 1997 novel, American Pastoral. In 2001, The Human Stain was awarded the United Kingdom's WH Smith Literary Award for the best book of the year. In 2002, he was awarded the National Book Foundation's Award for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. Literary critic Harold Bloom has named him as one of the four major American novelists still at work, along with Thomas Pynchon, Don DeLillo, and Cormac McCarthy. His 2004 novel, The Plot Against America, won the Sidewise Award for Alternate History in 2005 as well as the Society of American Historians’ prize. Roth was also awarded the United Kingdom's W.H. Smith Award for the best book of the year, an award Roth has received twice. He was honored in his hometown in October, 2005 when then-Mayor Sharpe James presided over the unveiling of a street sign in Roth's name on the corner of Summit and Keer Avenues, where Roth lived for much of his childhood, a setting immortalized in The Plot Against America. A plaque on the house where the Roths lived was also unveiled. In May, 2006, he was given the PEN/Nabokov Award.

In the cozy atmosphere of "Petnoto na Rorschach" in Sofia we will introduce the newest Roth’s book, "Indignation", which has just been published in Bulgarian. Nevena Dishlieva-Krasteva, translator of the novel, will tell us a few words about her work on the text; Elizabeth Kostova, a writer, will speak about the importance and overall contribution of the author to contemporary literature; Joseph Shamli, an actor, will read a short excerpt from "Indignation" to let us capture the spirit of the book. Welcome to honor one of the greatest writers of our time!

May 20 th, 7 p.m., "Petnoto na Rorschach" - Sofia, 8 Hristo Belchev Str.

A Demonstration of "Teacher Effectiveness Training" by Dr. Thomas Gordon

We are pleased to invite you to the first demonstration, open to the public in Bulgaria, of the practical program "Teacher Effectiveness Training" (TET) by Dr. Thomas Gordon, author of the book of the same name, published by Colibri. The presentation will be held on April 9th at 6 p.m. in Greenwich Bookstore, 37 Vitosha Blvd., Sofia!

This unique presentation will be useful for all professionals involved in education - teachers, tutors, teachers in higher education, professionals in the field of non-formal education, heads of educational institutions and social services.

Most teachers know how to teach. However, few teachers are trained in daily communication and possess valuable skills in interpersonal relationships, allowing them to manage all human factors in the learning process.

Darina Georgieva will open the event; being a representative of Gordon Training International Institute in Bulgaria, she will "introduce" the author Dr. Thomas Gordon (1918-2002) to the guests: he’d been nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize; he’d been awarded a golden medal of the American Psychologists’ Foundation; and, of course, he remains the founder of Gordon Training International. Mariana Schmit will speak about the philosophy underlying conceptual framework of the program "Teacher Effectiveness Training". Julia Popova, a psychologist, will answer the question: What are the barriers to learning and cognition and how to deal with them?

Certified instructors will make specific demonstrations - how to deal with unacceptable behavior of students, which are the most typical forms of opposition (confrontation), what else should we know about I-message. The event, which will last two hours, is open to the public! Admission is free.
